The '80s boy band takes another stab at stardom ... will the old fans be there for them?
New Kids on the Block are throwing their (artfully askew) hats back into the ring. The big reveal comes this Friday at 7am, when all five original members will appear on "The Today" show to announce their big comeback. Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, and Jordan and Jonathan Knight are all in their mid- to late-30s now, with nine kids among them (actual kid-kids, not young men calling themselves "kids.") So the big question is, do they still have the & er, "right stuff"? (Oh, oh, oh, oh / Oh, oh, oh, oh!)
Well, let's see. The Backstreet Boys, another blockbuster boy band of days gone by, reunited last year to lackluster reviews and sales. And NKOTB has an even bigger challenge, since their heyday peaked around 1990 ... which means their biggest fans have moved on to mortgages and PTA meetings.
Whatever. There's a buzz around the will-they/won't-they drama, if for nothing more than to see how they'll pull off this comeback. All the guys (except Jonathan Knight, who went into real estate development) tried solo careers in either music or acting, with varying degrees of success. Wahlberg's participation may be the biggest surprise, considering he's had the most legitimate screen career ("Band of Brothers," "Saw").
What do you think? Can NKOTB recapture the magic, or has the moment passed?
