Messy Divorce Gets Messier

Heather Mills had it all: pop-star husband, tons of money, beautiful little girl -- the works. Then her marriage to ex-Beatle Paul McCartney hit the skids. Back when the seemingly endless divorce began, it was Paul who looked bad, with reports of him locking Heather out of their home and saying stuff that made him sound like an overly needy old man, who was even jealous of their daughter, Beatrice, age 4.

But Heather, 40, squandered the sympathy pretty quickly. Just last year, the former model -- who famously lost her leg in 1993 after being hit by a London motorcycle cop -- won over viewers when she competed on "Dancing with the Stars." But now, to go by the boos heard around the red carpet this weekend when Heather was a judge at the Miss USA pageant, any goodwill she gained is long gone.

Last month, a judge awarded her nearly $50 million in the divorce from Paul. But Heather had sought $250 million from the ex-Beatle for their five-year marriage. Even Justice Hugh Bennett, who presided over the case, commented on her "exorbitant financial demands" -- which only reinforced the public's notion of her as a gold digger. The judge also said her testimony was "not just inconsistent and inaccurate, but also less than candid."

Pouring It All Out

Then, Heather stunned courtroom onlookers by pouring a jug of water over the head of Paul's lawyer, Fiona Shackleton. Later, Heather smugly told Britain's GMTV, "Mrs. Shackleton said something under her breath, so I cleansed and baptized her. I thought she looked fantastic -- I thought it did her a world of good." Meow!

She reportedly had another tantrum when she found out that Paul took lady friend Nancy Shevell on an island getaway, after having been seen with actress Rosanna Arquette. "I think he's got three different girlfriends," she sniffed, clearly trying to stir up trouble. "So I wish all the girls the best of luck."

Now Heather says she plans to move to Los Angeles, where she thinks she's better liked than in her native England. (We can't imagine Paul letting her take Beatrice overseas, but that's a drama yet to come.) "I love England," she told Britain's Daily Mail, "but everything that has happened makes me realize I'll be better off in the States."

Heather's even been seen chatting up Paris Hilton publicist Elliot Mintz, perhaps looking for tips on changing her image. She'll need all the help she can get.

Do you think Heather's image problems are all her own fault? Or would she be hated for splitting up with a Beatle, no matter how she was acting?
