Set Style: Office a la Mode

Wilhelmina Slater's office at Mode magazine mixes retro-futuristic '70s style and ultra-chic chinoiserie pieces -- a fabulous, feminine, AND bold look that takes guts, but not necessarily an Amex Black Card. You can transfer the fashion-forward "Ugly Betty" diva's office look to your home with a lick of paint and a few new furnishings. Just follow these simple designer tricks and you'll have a chic space in no time.

First, think symmetrical. It's always better to feature a pair of items -- like lamps on a credenza or chairs flanking a window. Two of these sleek black Rider Table Lamps from CB2 from CB2 ($49) would look amazing atop the 6-Drawer Narrow Leg Dresser in White from West Elm ($749). The Palmer Stool from Z Gallerie ($99.95) adds an exotic dash. Use as a side table, or, for a bold statement, flank your fireplace with a pair.

Second, go gloss. Shiny is the new matte. Try painting a room or just a wall in bold, high-gloss paint for added fierce factor. For all-out shine, nothing's more glamorous than a mirror. With this Mirror Side Table from West Elm ($249), you can rest your drink and check your makeup at the same time.
