Do you feel like you can't face the world without this season's oversized Fendi sunglasses ... but don't want to take out a second mortgage on your home to buy them? Think that if only you could afford the right shades, you'd be sure to find the elusive dream job/man/respect/inner peace you've been searching for all your life? Maybe you should consider renting.
Bag Borrow or Steal, the website which rents out designer bags to the cash-strapped and image-conscious, is now offering sunglasses too. The site, known as fashion's answer to Netflix, has turned the idea of "borrowed luxury" into big business -- especially since it scored a product placement coup in the "Sex and the City" movie. Carrie Bradshaw's assistant (played by Jennifer Hudson) relies on the site to ensure she always has a new It-bag on her arm.
There are more than 170 pairs to choose from, including styles by Chanel, Dior, Fendi, Proenza Schouler, and Tom Ford. And unlike your Netflix DVDs, they won't show up scratched: Every pair is buffed and polished between users.
The cost of a month's rental ranges from about $37 to $285 (for a pair of diamond-studded Tiffany shades), though there's a discount if you pay $10 a month for membership. And if you love your rentals so much that you can't bear to part with them, you can buy them from the site. Kind of like leasing a car; it may not make great financial sense, but it's a way for the easily bored to satisfy a craving for a constant stream of new stuff.
Would you ever rent accessories to make a good impression?
