Last year, Stephen Colbert had a minor league hockey team mascot named in his honor. (It's the Saginaw Spirit's Steagle Colbeagle, FYI.)
Now, he's scored his own species of spider. Yup. A spider. Those creepy crawly things with eight legs. Y'know, like in "Spider-Man."
East Carolina University associate professor Jason Bond has offered to name one of 27 new species of Trapdoor spider after the host of "The Colbert Report" because, well, he asked. Or demanded, actually. When Stephen heard that the professor had named one of the spiders after Neil Young (that would be "Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi"), he decided he needed a namesake arachnid as well. "Where's my spider?" he said on his show. "I have lots of animals named after me: turtles, eagles, Ontario Junior League hockey mascots. The world demands an eight-legged tribute to Stephen Colbert and I do not mean another barbershop quartet."
