Betsey Johnson is Totes Oz

She once designed a collection featuring the Tin Man, the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, Dorothy, and Toto, so no prizes for guessing that Betsey Johnson is a big fan of "The Wizard of Oz." It's the movie's 70th anniversary next year and, to mark the occasion, Ms. Johnson and 19 other designers will create their own versions of the legendary ruby slippers.

Warner Brothers has joined forces with Swarovski Crystals to run the promotion, proceeds from which will benefit the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The specially-designed shoes will make appearances across the country, including at New York Fashion Week, before being auctioned off for charity in the fall of 2009.

The film's visual flights of fancy are a perfect match for Betsey Johnson's playful, punk-inspired aesthetic. According to the New York Times, she said that she made her design "as high as I could go, as sparkly as I could go and as fun and full of polka dots and a tulle bow as I could make them."

Tibi designer Amy Smilovic, on the other hand, came up with a spat-pump hybrid (spamp?) in red crocodile with a flower embellishment. All you need to go with them are white socks, a gingham frock, and a yellow brick road.
